Short-Form Video for Attorneys: What to Post and How Often
A simple guide for attorneys on short-form video: formats that work, how to film, how often to post, and what to say.
Why short-form video works for lawyers
Short vertical video is how a large share of your future clients now find and judge professionals. It lets people hear you, see you and decide whether they trust you before they ever call. That is hard to do with a paragraph on a website.
Formats that work
- Q and A: answer one common client question in under a minute
- Myth versus fact: correct something people get wrong about your area of law
- Mistakes to avoid: three things people do that hurt their case
- Walk through a process, such as what happens after an arrest or at a first custody hearing
- Local news and law changes explained in plain language
- Behind the scenes: your office, your team, how you prepare
How to film
You do not need a studio to start. A recent phone, a quiet room, a window for soft light and a clip-on microphone will get you most of the way. Film vertical, look at the lens, and start with the answer instead of an introduction.
Film in batches. One well-planned shoot day can produce weeks of content, which is how busy attorneys stay consistent.
What to say
Open with the problem or question in the first sentence. Give one clear point. End with a simple next step. Skip legal jargon, and speak the way you would to a client at your desk. Do not guarantee outcomes or give advice specific to one person's case.
How often to post
Consistency beats volume. A reasonable starting point is a few videos a week on one or two platforms, kept up for several months. If you can sustain more, daily posting gives the algorithms and your audience more to work with.
Where to publish
Post the same video to Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Facebook. Adjust the caption for each platform if you can, and add on-screen captions because many people watch without sound.
Turn the best videos into ads
Your top organic videos already show that people respond to them. Promote those through Meta ads to your service area, with a clear way to contact you. See our guide to Meta ads for law firms.
Keep it compliant
Video is advertising under most state rules. Review your state bar requirements for disclaimers, testimonials and claims, and read our guide to law firm social media compliance.
